WEDDINGS IN THE SWISS CAPITAL

Wedding Photographer in Bern — Your Day in the UNESCO Old Town

Bern doesn't shout. The capital works its magic quietly: sandstone arcades that glow warm in the evening sun, the green loop of the Aare around the Old Town, and a skyline of red rooftops that has barely changed in centuries. As a documentary wedding photographer, I love Bern precisely for that calm — it gives your photos a timeless backdrop that never competes with the two of you. I photograph weddings across Switzerland and am regularly in Bern, whether for an intimate civil ceremony or a full wedding day in and around the city.

How I photograph a wedding in Bern

My approach is documentary first: I follow your day as it actually happens — the nervous minutes before the ceremony, your families' faces during the vows, the laughter at the apéro — and keep directed photos to a short, relaxed couple session. In Bern that usually means:

  • Ceremony and emotions unstaged — I work quietly and without flash wherever possible.
  • A 30–45 minute couple walk through the Old Town or along the Aare, timed for the best light.
  • Group photos kept short — planned in advance, done in minutes, so you can get back to your guests.

Bern is wonderfully walkable, which makes it easy to collect very different backdrops within a single hour:

  • The UNESCO Old Town — kilometres of arcades, cobblestones and fountains; in the early evening the sandstone turns golden.
  • Rose Garden (Rosengarten) — the classic view over the rooftops towards the Minster, framed by roses in summer.
  • Bern Minster and its terrace — gothic drama above the Aare, lovely soft light on the platform.
  • The Aare banks — turquoise water, weeping willows and a relaxed, almost Mediterranean feel in summer.
  • Gurten — Bern's local mountain: meadows, long views over the city to the Alps, perfect for sunset portraits.

Civil weddings and intimate celebrations

Many couples in Bern marry in a small circle — a civil ceremony followed by lunch or an apéro with their closest people. I photograph these short formats often and gladly: two to four hours of coverage are usually enough for the ceremony, portraits in the Old Town and the first toasts. If you are planning a bigger celebration at a venue in the countryside or by the lakes nearby, I simply stay with you for the whole day — from getting ready to the dance floor. For mountain scenery within easy reach, have a look at my page for the Bernese Oberland and Interlaken.

English-speaking couples welcome

Bern is an international city, and a good share of my couples plan their wedding in English. All communication — from the first call to the planning of your timeline and the delivery of your gallery — works smoothly in English or German. If your families are travelling in from abroad, I'm happy to share tips for the day: where the light is best, how much time to plan for distances, and which spots work even in the rain (Bern's arcades are the best bad-weather insurance in Switzerland).

FAQ — weddings in Bern

Do you photograph civil ceremonies in Bern?

Yes, very regularly. Short coverages for the ceremony plus a couple session are one of my favourite formats in the capital.

Where do couple photos work best in Bern?

My favourites are the arcades of the Old Town, the Minster terrace, the Rose Garden and the banks of the Aare — ideally in the last two hours before sunset.

What happens if it rains?

Bern has kilometres of covered arcades — we keep shooting, and the wet cobblestones actually make the light more atmospheric. I always carry a plan B.

Do you also cover weddings outside the city?

Yes. Venues around Bern, at Lake Thun or in the Bernese Oberland are all within my regular range — travel within Switzerland is straightforward for me.

Can we book you for just a few hours?

Yes. Coverage is flexible, from a two-hour civil ceremony to a full wedding day.

Do you deliver the photos in high resolution?

Yes — you receive an online gallery with high-resolution, individually edited images for printing and sharing.
